A dozen years ago many believed that India s Tata Group the country s oldest and largest conglomerate was a bloated behemoth that would eventually go under.Instead it has become a powerhouse in the st century focusing on core businesses like steel and automobiles and seizing opportunities including the hugely profitable outsourcing business that came with India s dramatic economic transformation. related stories Porsche Names New CEO for US Business Court Gives Business Wins Loss A slew of recent acquisitions including for Britain s Tetley Tea and Boston s Ritz Carlton Hotel have thrust the Tata conglomerate which comprises companies and was largely unknown outside India until recently into the global spotlight. A year ago Tata Steel Ltd. became the world s sixth biggest steelmaker when it bought Britain based Corus Group for billion. Then in January Tata Motors Ltd. grabbed the world s attention when it unveiled the planet s cheapest car a four seater that could change the ! global auto industry. Surprising naysayers the company has also been named the preferred bidder for Ford Motor s Jaguar and Land Rover businesses. We have been thinking bigger than we have done in the past said Chairman Ratan N. Tata in a rare interview at Bombay House the group s headquarters since . We have been bolder . and we have been more aggressive in the marketplace. In five years through March annual group sales more than doubled to billion while market capitalization of its listed companies increased six fold to billion. The numbers do not include Corus whose sales totaled billion in . While recent rapid earnings growth at Tata Steel and Tata Motors has slowed net profit at Tata Consultancy India s biggest outsourcing company continues to rise climbing percent in the October December quarter. The globalization strategy will only get bigger said the barrel chested Tata. We are at an early stage he said. We are still feeling our way. The resurgence of the year old T! ata brand is as much a story of the country s economic rise as it is about the success of the chairman whose ascent to the top job in coincided with the beginning of India s shift from a socialist style state to a market economy. For decades after India s independence from Britain in the government fixed prices imposed curbs on foreign goods and capital brought draconian tax laws and set limits to what a company could produce. The restrictive regime stifled growth and bred corruption. The Tata Group was hit harder than others because it strove to create a business culture that emphasized transparency and integrity. Tata executives are known for refusing to pay bribes a widespread Indian practice and their lifestyles are mostly modest. Ratan Tata a bachelor lives in a beachfront Mumbai apartment and is driven to work in an inexpensive Tata sedan. When Ratan took over the company from his gregarious uncle J.R.D. Tata India s economy was starting to open up but the Tata group was almost falling apart. Sales were sluggish and government controls h! ad limited new investments. J.R.D. s hands off approach had led to inflated egos and squabbling among top executives at the group s many companies. All of the s was marred with speculation about who would succeed the ailing J.R.D. Author Gita Piramal describes the conglomerate that Rata inherited a tangled legacy. India was changing and changing rapidly and outsiders had begun to describe the House of Tatas as a dinosaur Piramal wrote in her best seller Business Maharajas. The company was founded in when Jamsetji N. Tata a young trader from India s Parsi minority set out to bring technology and money from around the world to establish India s first textile mill. The company went on to build the first steel plant overcoming resistance of British colonial rulers and later built the airline that eventually became the nation s flagship carrier Air India which is no longer part of the Tata group. When Ratan became chairman many heads of group companies had scant respect for him.! He was a loner who had graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor s degree in architecture and had led a variety of Tata businesses far from the limelight. Unlike his uncle Ratan took charge from the start. It took him years to clean up the mess from the power struggles pushing out a generation of executives and jettisoning several peripheral businesses. At Tata Steel tens of thousands of jobs were cut. Tata Motors built the first fully Indian designed car the Indica a roomy hatchback rolled out in . Tata Consultancy Services meanwhile hired thousands to become a global power in outsourcing doing back office work and software engineering for Western firms. Just as the group s fortunes were reviving the Indian economy hit a slump a slowdown aggravated in by new tensions with Pakistan. That s when it became compelling for Tata to look overseas. The big change came five years ago at a company annual meeting where the chairman exhorted us to go treat the world as the market recalls R. Gopalakrishnan an executive director at Tata Sons the g! roup s holding company. What followed was a massive push to acquire businesses abroad. Nearly overseas buyouts have since helped the group s international revenues grow fourfold to billion and contributed more than a third to its total sales last year. Takeovers include the truck unit of South Korea s Daewoo Motors Singapore s Natsteel and Thailand s Millennium Steel. The Indian giant is also snapping up mining rights in Africa and Asia. For all that Ratan Tata insists he hasn t traded off the group s long cherished values. No Tata family members are among the country s growing list of billionaires because the family business is owned mostly by Tata funded charitable trusts. A substantial portion of the group s income is channeled into various philanthropies that have helped build some of the country s finest institutions including India s first cancer hospital. Tata companies are also known for offering worker benefits that are rare in India including pension and child car! e allowances. Tata Steel hasn t seen a strike in the past years. The one thing I had always felt is that I wanted to go to bed at night saying I had not succumbed to the temptation of giving up the values and the ethics that the group had been built on just for short term gains Tata said. Some experts believe the group is still too bloated. Tata concedes that he has not been very successful at pruning the number of companies and downsizing staff which currently totals about . The big issue however is who will succeed Tata after he steps down. The Tatas have been producing many things successfully except children said Dwijendra Tripathy a business historian who predicts Ratan Tata may stay on at least five more years. It is only in the past two years that he has come into global limelight. It is human for him to be wanting to stay on for some more time achieve some more milestones he said. Tata won t say when he plans to retire but insists he is looking for a successor. That person doesn t have to be a Tata doesn t have to be from within the or! ganization. The veteran Rangers manager has now won all three of the renewals since his return to Ibrox last January in the process not conceding a single goal. From the moment Nacho Novo scored the first of his double separated by a goal from Barry Ferguson it was obvious Celtic had neither the wit nor the skill to prevent a setback that allowed their fiercest rivals to draw level on points. Celtic s was an untidy generally sluggish performance marked by uncertainty in all areas and reflected in the nine yellow cards they accumulated for a variety of offences born of frustration. Ranger! s on the other hand were purposeful focused and especially after the opening goal confident and assured. That score from Novo would be no surprise to anyone familiar with Celtic s desperate record of having failed to keep an away clean sheet for more than a year. Even so the slipshod defending that allowed the little Spaniard to give Rangers the lead would have left Gordon Strachan as well as the Celtic supporters in the stand immediately behind Artur Boruc perplexed. Smith s inclusion of Novo an irregular first team pick was surely in response to the news that Darren O Dea would be at right back for Celtic. The young Irishman a natural central defender and emphatically left footed was drafted in as emergency cover and may have been seen as potentially vulnerable to the Spaniard s pace and skill. McManus s absence seemed especially significant when O Dea who by then had switched with Caldwell was again the victim of a certain misfortune at the concession of Rangers second goal. It began with the strangely sleepy Shunsuke Nakamura losing possession in midfield. The ball was played out to Cousin on the right and from his cross McCulloch had his shot blocked by ! By the time Novo completed his double from the penalty that resulted from Sno s trip on Charlie Adam Rangers were comfortably in control having allowed their visitors much of the possession they had denied them earlier clearly convinced that Celtic were incapable of doing anything with it. The Indy Racing League and the Champ Car World Series signed a deal Friday to unify the two American open wheel circuits bringing them under the umbrella of the IRL. It ll eliminate the confusion for the race fans and the sponsors because there ll be just one type of car and one type of ! motor and everyone will be running together. May the best team win. After years of bitter rivalry that confused fans promoted apathy and nearly buried the sport Champ Car agreed to cease operations giving the surviving IRL the opportunity to rebuild open wheel s lost prestige. The deal which has been in the works for about two weeks was announced Friday in Indianapolis where both series have their headquarters. A statement was released saying Owners of Champ Car and the Indy Racing League completed an agreement in principle Friday that will unify the sport for . Gerald Forsythe co owner of Champ Car signed an agreement in principle in Chicago joining his partner Kevin Kalkhoven and Indy Racing League founder and CEO Tony George who had signed late Thursday in Indianapolis. IRL spokesman John Griffin said details will be forthcoming in a news conference next week. Earlier in the day it appeared talks might be stalled when Kalkhoven left without comment. Bobby Rahal who won t! hree championships in what was then the CART series and is now co owner of an IRL team welcomed news of the agreement. This is a great day for open wheel racing said Rahal whose year old son Graham is a Champ Car driver. I applaud all of those that made this possible but want to especially recognize all of those that made sacrifices and concessions to secure the future of open wheel racing. I truly believe that this is the first step toward restoring open wheel racing and the Indianapolis to not only where it once was but beyond. Over the years numerous attempts to merge the series failed mostly over who would retain control. This time though all the hurdles were cleared as George worked together with Kalkhoven and Forsythe to reach an agreement. ABC News Intensifies Efforts in North Korea Broadcasting and Cable

North Korea has not been the most hospitable destination for Western journalists but ABC News has made the tightly controlled dictatorship a priority. Bob Woodruff traveled there last week to report on the country s ongoing denuclearization. He ll also cover the New York Philharmonic s historic performance in the capital city of Pyongyang Tuesday which will air on PBS Tuesday at p.m. EST on Great Performances . WNET New York will also stream the performance live at a.m. on its video portal . For ABC the relationship with North Korea extends back decades. I ve been working on trying to gain access to North Korea since the early s said Chuck Lustig director of foreign news coverage at ABC. Lustig has traveled to North Korea seven times to meet with government officials and negotiate access. The news division s first big break didn t come until when Woodruff reported from the country the first time. In Diane Sawyer traveled to North Korea and the network devoted one hour in pri! metime to her dispatches from inside the country. Unparalleled access still comes with government chaperones. We always have our government minders with us Lustig conceded. They re always at our side. But their escorts are less militant than in years past. Indeed one of the biggest changes inside the country Lustig said has been the way they treat journalists. We have gotten really tremendous access. We are able to talk to regular North Koreans. To me that s a big difference. Woodruff will report from North Korea for the next several days for ABC News various broadcasts including the weekend editions of Good Morning America World News with Charles Gibson and Nightline . He was allowed inside the Yongbyon Nuclear Facility . That report will air Friday on World News . He ll also visit the southern city of Kaesong where South Koreans are permitted to travel. And he ll be on GMA Tuesday for a preview of the Philharmonic concert which will just be wrapping up. However there are ! several stories ABC News is still finessing in North Korea. A volunteer just took the microphone and roused the crowd a bit with a call for volunteers. p.m. Mayor Gary Becker was seen entering Memorial Hall about minutes ago flanked by U.S. Marshals. p.m. The Babcock family from Pleasant Prairie was first in line to see Sen. Barack Obama. People dubbed Jenn Babcock the new Obama girl for a personalized dress she made Tuesday night to show her support. The dress bore peace signs and phrases like Change We Can Believe In . Michael Babcock a year old who just passed his driver s test drove the family to the event. Behind them Carolyn Vinson of Racine sang songs of praise for Obama inventing lyrics like Didja Didja Didja Get That Power And Deb Kilgore of Caledonia said she came to be inspired like she hasn t been since John F. Kennedy led the nation. Most had alr! eady made up their voting minds. Scott Sweeney of Franklin pointed out they wouldn t have braved the cold if they still needed convincing. Not being of voting age didn t stop attendees. Kenosha high school students Melissa Sobin Ron Palmen Michael Muir and Allyson Brunner spent their off day at the event. Even if he doesn t get elected he s started something in young people Sobin said. Now they know they can do something. They re on the e mail list paying attention to the issues. When I read it I think he s actually writing to me Palmen said. Twin sisters Veronica and Monica Tye of Racine came to support the first real African American contender for the presidency. A rescue squad has been calledtoMemorial Hall to assist a person who is not feeling well. The person who has been waiting since p.m. is feeling dizzy according to a reporter. p.m. p.m. It s getting crazy at Memorial Hall as the Barack Obama rally is less than two and a half hours away from beginning. About staffe! rs and volunteers have been let in to the hall while more than Obama supporters wait outside in the cold. According to a reporter who is stationed outside of the hall the scenefeels more like a rock concert than a political rally.The crowd on occasion chants Obama as they patiently wait to get in to the hall. More than a half a dozen p.m. The Journal Times has learned in the last hour that the Operating Engineers Local has endorsed Barack Obama for president. Senator Obama s message of change and hope make him an attractive candidate. As President we believe Obama will achieve critically needed changes that benefit working families Local business manager Mark Maierle said in a statement. It is important to have a President who believes in the value of labor and the importance of a strong diverse middle class. p.m. According to a release from the Hillary Clinton campaign she will visit the state from Saturday to Tuesday. p.m. A representative of the Obama campaign in Washington D.C. called Ken Lumpkin publisher of the Insider News Wednesday mor! ning to make sure that he did not feel left out he said. They basically have assured us that that was not their intention and that they wanted to do whatever possible to rectify the situation Lumpkin said. I feel positive that the Obama campaign recognized that this was an oversight. Whether it was on purpose or not it was an oversight. Lumpkin said he and other black officials have been offered the chance to be on the stage at the Obama rally tonight. Lumpkin an Obama supporter said the campaign is inclusive and he stands by his assertion that the local point people of the campaign ignored the minority community. Alderman Michael Shields chairman of the Democratic Party of Racine said he was contacted by the campaign last night and offered a place on the stage. I support Democrats Shields said. My role has not changed. These comments come a day after a story ran in the Journal Times detailing in which black leaders indicated that the campaign has ignored them. BACK STORY p! .m. It also appears that the traffic around the hall has picked up considerably during the last minutes. p.m. Four news trucks are outside of Memorial Hall as the media begins to arrive at Memorial Hall where presidential hopeful Barack Obama is scheduled to speak this afternoon. Across the street four protestors hold up signs demanding Obama to accept an invitation to debate Hillary Clinton in Wisconsin. On Monday U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin and Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton called on Obama to debate Clinton in before the state s primary on Feb. . Obama s spokesman Dan Leistikow according to an AP story said his schedule is still being put together. Outside on the steps about a dozen Obama supporters have started forming a line to get into the rally. It s still two hours before the doors open and another two hours before the Senator is expected to arrive. Inside the hall workers are putting the finishing touches on seating and signs. But between the bad news from state officials and health advocates who testified before the Senate Health and Welfare Committee Tuesday were some clear ways to cut health care costs although almost all of those options cost upfront money and don t pay off for several more years. Sen. Doug Racine D Chittenden the chairman of the health care committee said he called the hearings to determine where best to put state funds toward health prevention and education efforts to cut costs across the system. But even h! e gave a stark analysis of the system both nationally and in Vermont as he kicked off the hearing. There is a serious concern that our health care system is not sustainable he said. When costs continue to escalate at double digit rates and wages don t keep pace we will eventually see the system fall apart. Vermont spends about . billion annually on health care according to Department of Health Commissioner Sharon Moffatt with about percent of that spent on people with chronic conditions. Nationally one third of all health care costs are linked to diseases associated with obesity she added a trend that costs Vermont about million annually. Vermont is one of the healthiest states she said. But with more than percent of Vermonters overweight we still have a ways to go. The state s successful health prevention efforts are small but real. Moffatt pointed to the healthy living classes under the state s Blueprint for Health. The six week course teaches people with chronic diseases! to set personal health goals and the effort has cut in half emergency room visits from people who have finished the course she explained. Educating Vermonters on the need for regular checkups and tests to catch diseases such as diabetes or cancer earlier when treatment is easier and less expensive will help curb long term costs Moffatt continued. But she also focused on what she called the three real causes of death in Vermont tobacco lack of physical activity or nutrition and substance abuse. Much of the state s Medicaid budget is consumed by a small number of older Vermonters with serious health issues but that overall elderly population is trending upward in the state with the state s senior citizen population expected to increase by percent in the next two decades according to Joan Senecal commissioner of the Vermont Department of Disabilities Aging and Independent Living. Simple efforts such as educating senior citizens about the importance of a good diet or engaging them in regular strength training can mean the difference between a per! son being in a wheelchair or walking by themselves with a cane she told the committee. It s not the aging itself that is causing all these health problems Senecal said. What we are seeing instead are older Vermonters who are not practicing healthy lifestyles. Meanwhile members of the Vermont Tobacco Evaluation and Review Board urged lawmakers to continue its smoking cessation efforts. Tobacco Board chairman Dr. Theodore Marcy testified by telephone Tuesday because he was needed at the Burlington hospital to drain fluid from the chest of a lung cancer patient. I know this is a challenging year for the budget but we wouldn t be doing our jobs if we didn t recommend program changes said Marcy who was highly critical of Gov. James Douglas proposal to level fund the cessation program next year. He pointed to California as the leading example of a state controlling health care costs through reduced smoking. Efforts undertaken there in the late s have saved the state an estimated ! billion in health care costs in the s Marcy said. Vermont has also been successful in this area he added such as now having fewer people smoking than there were just seven years ago.
